Fantasize about adventures on the high seas while sipping from this “Tentacle Mug” by Asheville-based studio potter Anja Bartels. Anja’s nautical surface designs are inspired by her love of the ocean and her childhood memories of growing up in a port city on the North Sea. Each mug is hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel, then painted with a dark underglaze that is scraped away (using a technique called sgraffito) to reveal the porcelain underneath. The interior of the mug is painted with a gorgeous turquoise glaze called “Key West Blue.”
About Anja Bartels
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Anja discovered pottery making while living in an intentional community in Virginia. Passion ignited, she returned home to study in the German Ceramics Guild. After completing a three-year apprenticeship with a master potter, she received her journeyman ceramics degree from the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. She is now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville.
Please Note: Each mug is individually hand-thrown and hand-carved. Expect slight variations from the images shown.
