Stone Gray Flask
Description
This stoneware flask by Kate Marotz carries her signature language of handbuilt form—quietly sculptural, textured, and rooted in the rhythms of the natural world. Built using coil and pinch techniques, the flask’s silhouette feels both deliberate and organic, its gentle asymmetry revealing the slow, thoughtful pace of its making. A soft gray surface, matte and speckled, brings to mind lichen-covered stone and sun-warmed fields, offering subtle tonal shifts that deepen with close attention.
A circular motif centered on the body creates a point of stillness within the form, echoing natural symbols of cycles and continuity. Across the surface, the speckling and slight breaks in color record the process of building and firing, giving the piece a sense of lived-in warmth.
As with all of Marotz’s work, this flask invites touch as much as observation—an object that balances function with quiet storytelling, encouraging the user to notice the small, grounding details woven into daily life.
