Siberian Elm Table
Description
This Siberian Elm Table by Rives McDow showcases the natural beauty of the tree alongside meticulous craftsmanship. The table’s top is carved from a large section of the tree, or “biscuit,” cut from the base of a Siberian elm in Boulder, Colorado, originally felled in 2007. Siberian elm is prized for its hardness and dimensional stability, making it an ideal choice for furniture. The long, organic extensions around the base of the tree are preserved, highlighting the tree’s unique character.
During the drying process, a crack developed, which McDow carefully filled with epoxy and adorned with gold leaf using the kensuki method, celebrating both the repair and the beauty of imperfection. The table is finished with CrystaLac Brite Tone, a water-based polyurethane designed for musical instruments, enhancing the wood’s natural luster while protecting it for lasting use.
The turned legs are crafted from ironbark eucalyptus, fitted with lag bolts and numbered plates for precise assembly. Wooden cups are included to distribute weight when placed on rugs, though they are optional for hardwood floors. This table exemplifies McDow’s skill in combining natural forms, structural integrity, and artistic detail into a functional work of art.
