Northstar Narwhal Bowl
Description
This striking porcelain bowl by Asheville-based studio potter Anja Bartels features her signature nautical imagery, inspired by a lifelong love of the ocean and her childhood in a North Sea port city. The bowl’s surface showcases a beautifully rendered narwhal design, created using sgraffito—a meticulous technique in which a dark underglaze is painted on, then carefully carved away to reveal the luminous white porcelain beneath. The interior is finished with a rich, purple glaze, adding depth and contrast to the crisp marine motif.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Bartels began her creative journey as a stencil artist before discovering clay while living in an intentional community in Virginia. She went on to train intensively in Germany, completing a three-year apprenticeship with a master potter and earning her journeyman ceramics degree through the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. Now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville, Bartels continues to merge storytelling, craftsmanship, and her deep connection to the sea in every vessel she creates.
Please Note: Each bowl is individually hand-thrown and hand-carved. Expect slight variations from the images shown.
