Description
Jim Carpenter is an award-winning bird carver known for his exquisitely detailed, lifelike sculptures. Based in Pfafftown, North Carolina, he meticulously carves each piece from tupelo gum wood, bringing his subjects to life with rich layers of artist oils or acrylics. His work is showcased in fine art and craft galleries, earning him recognition for both technical mastery and artistic sensitivity.
With numerous Best of Show awards to his name, Carpenter has competed at prestigious competitions across the country and exhibited in juried fine art shows alongside two- and three-dimensional works. His sculptures have also been featured in esteemed institutions, including the North Carolina Museum of History and the Governor’s Mansion.
A dedicated educator, Carpenter shares his expertise through bird-carving classes at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem and the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. He also gives live demonstrations throughout the year, offering insight into his intricate process. As a member of Piedmont Craftsmen, he remains deeply engaged with the region’s rich craft traditions while continuing to refine and elevate his art.
