Wet Felting Demo with Kendall White

In celebration of American Craft Week, Asheville fiber artist Kendall White will be at Grovewood Gallery on Saturday, October 13 from 11am-4pm demonstrating the wet felting process she uses to create sculptural wool baskets and merino wool neck wraps.

Kendall began her exploration in fiber art at a very early age, often helping her grandmother, a quilter, in cutting and piecing together fabric. In 2005, she moved to Smithville, TN to pursue her BFA in fiber arts at the Appalachian Center for Craft, studying weaving, spinning, dyeing and printmaking. But it wasn’t until 2008, at a workshop at the John C. Campbell Folk School, that she opened her eyes to one of the oldest forms of textile creation: felting. Kendall has since been dedicated to honing her craft while exploring new methods for creation. Her work can be found at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Store and Gallery of the Mountains (our sister shop) in Asheville.

Demonstration: The Ancient Art of Chair Caning

Brandy Clements of Silver River Center for Chair Caning in the River Arts District will be at Grovewood Gallery February 16-18 demonstrating authentic cattail rush weaving on a chair seat designed by Brian Brace Fine Furniture. This style of weaving dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and can be found on classic Gustav Stickley chair seats.

Brandy is a 4th generation chair caner and a self-proclaimed "chair nerd" on a mission to dispel the myth that chair seat weaving is a lost art. She and her husband/business partner Dave Klingler have been weaving new lives into chairs for over 12 years, and have taught over 100 sessions at their school, offering classes on laced and pressed caning as well as splint, rush, and Shaker tape weaving. This year marks Silver River's 4th anniversary as the nation's only fully dedicated chair caning school and museum. The school is also an official education center of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
