Worm Wood Bowl
Description
Fred Mead creates stunning glass bowls and other forms inspired by the interconnectedness of the world around us. As a child, he learned how to paint in oil from his father, who was an artist and industrial designer with the American automotive company General Motors. His mother worked in the blueprint department, and when he was young, she would bring home scratch paper for him to draw on. Before he could even drive, Fred learned how to fly a plane and obtained a student pilot’s license. Some of his early paintings, made during his time at the Cranbrook Art Institute, depict his perspective from inside the cockpit of an airplane.
Mead graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design in 1979 with a Bachelor of Fine Art, focusing on painting, sculpture, and photography. Drawn by the mild climate and a desire to pursue fine art, he moved to North Carolina the following year. For decades, he has stacked and fused glass into forms that challenge perception. Some pieces resemble blocks of ice, while others incorporate readymade objects—marbles or medicine vials—into seamless sculptural vessels.
