Spring Hare

Description

Spring Hare captures the playful energy and surreal charm that define Josh Coté’s work. Crafted entirely from intricately twisted wire and perched atop a coiled spring, this whimsical sculpture blurs the line between motion and stillness, fantasy and form. With its elongated limbs, expressive posture, and finely woven detail, the hare feels plucked from a storybook world—alive with character and ready to leap.

Raised in a family of artists and shaped by a childhood spent traveling the East Coast art fair circuit, Coté draws inspiration from the imaginative tales of Lewis Carroll, H.G. Wells, and Dr. Seuss. Though trained in painting and drawing at the University of Michigan, he is a self-taught sculptor whose wire figures echo the lines of pen-and-ink illustrations brought into three dimensions.

Using only a hammer and needle-nosed pliers, Coté bends and weaves each piece by hand, creating dynamic forms infused with personality and movement. Spring Hare invites viewers into his “magical dream world,” where everyday materials take on a life of their own—and even a hare on a spring seems poised to hop into the unknown.
