N2TH3D33P
Description
Suspended high above the viewer, a solitary figure leans over the edge of a small steel boat, peering into the unseen depths below. An anchor descends from the boat’s hull to the earth below—tethering the elevated vessel to the ground, and symbolically, to the viewer’s gaze.
The title, N2TH3D33p, evokes a boat’s identification number but also reveals a layered message: “Into the Deep.” This coded title, painted on the bow, sets the tone for a sculpture that explores themes of reflection, vulnerability, and the search for meaning. With fluid repetition of line and the sparing use of copper, Alderman draws the viewer into an intimate, emotional moment—part inquiry, part surrender.
As with much of Alderman’s work, N2TH3D33p invites quiet contemplation. The figure’s posture suggests both courage and uncertainty, floating between weightlessness and groundedness, stillness and motion. It’s a visual meditation on what lies beneath the surface—both in the water below and within ourselves.
