This thumb piano (or kalimba) by husband-and-wife team Paul and Sue Bergstrom is a modern take on the African mbira variety of instruments. After being popularized in the 1960s, the thumb piano was sought after for its compact size and versatility.
Working from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, the Bergstrom’s combine their experience in design and woodworking to meticulously handcraft each part of their thumb pianos. On every instrument, you’ll notice numbers 1-8. Each number corresponds to a note on the diatonic scale. To play, simply cradle the instrument in your hands and pluck the tines (or keys) with your thumbs. Each thumb piano comes with an instructional booklet, including 28 songs, that makes learning easy for all ages.
Please Note: Because these are handcrafted items, no two are identical. Expect slight variations in grain patterns from the images shown.
