Description

Bob Doster, a celebrated sculptor with deep roots in Lancaster, South Carolina, has spent nearly five decades shaping both steel and lives. The eldest of six children in a family of high achievers, Bob’s artistic journey began early—first inspired by his grandmother, a Sunday painter, and later nurtured in his father’s metal shop, where he was allowed to experiment with a blowtorch at just eight years old. By age twelve, he had sold his first sculpture to a local bank president—and was hooked for life.

After high school, Bob married, became a father of two by nineteen, and opened a grocery store, working 16-hour days, seven days a week to build a successful business. But his creative spirit called him back to the arts. He sold the store, returned to school, and went on to earn a BFA from the University of South Carolina and an MFA from Clemson University.

Over the course of his 47-year career, Bob’s work has been exhibited and collected around the world. As a dedicated teaching artist with the South Carolina Arts Commission, he has worked with more than 150,000 students—from ages 4 to 80—guiding them in the creation of personal sculptures and public legacy pieces for schools across the Carolinas and Illinois. Whether in the studio or the classroom, Bob Doster’s passion for art continues to inspire generations.
