Description

Zachary Smith-Johnson is a self-taught artist who began making art in 2008, seeking a creative outlet from the monotony of factory work and a short-lived stint running a commercial painting company fresh out of high school. What began as a personal escape quickly evolved into a serious artistic practice—one that has earned recognition on both national and international stages.

Working primarily in steel, Zachary’s sculptural forms—often abstract and floral—reflect a deep sensitivity to material, movement, and emotion. His work caught the attention of renowned curator Stanlee Gatti, who invited him to exhibit at the prestigious FOG Design+Art fair in San Francisco, a nod to the originality and refinement of his craft.

As co-founder of the Western North Carolina Sculpture Center, Zachary has played an active role in shaping the region’s contemporary art landscape, creating opportunities for dialogue, mentorship, and innovation in the field of sculpture.

His work is held in private collections across several countries, a testament to its broad resonance. A recent milestone includes his sculpture being selected as the featured entrance piece for the University of Mississippi Art Museum—welcoming visitors and setting the tone for the museum’s dynamic collection.
