Honeybee & Hibiscus

Description

Asheville artist Kim Dills combines her background in design and illustration, love of textiles and patterns, and appreciation of wood to create unique, one-of-a-kind wall art.

Kim grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. She was introduced to art at an early age by her paternal grandmother, who was a weaver. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at East Carolina University, where she studied design and illustration. Upon graduation, Kim moved to Boulder and began taking weaving and fiber arts classes while working at the University of Colorado. In 2000, she moved back East and made the Asheville area her home. She raised Angora goats and Cotswold sheep for wool to incorporate in her fiber works and started taking classes in traditional Japanese fiber dyeing and resist techniques.

Her current body of work explores the combination of oils, hand-mixed stains, and glazes on wood. Using wood as her canvas allows the grain of the wood to become a design element amongst the pattern and subject matter. Kim favors poplar, maple, and birch because they’re light enough to help her achieve the colors she desires, and she starts by hand drawing on the wooden panel in pencil. She creates her own frames, even down to using walnut pegs in the joinery.
