This Hickory Table by Rives McDow is a remarkable example of nature’s resilience and the artist’s craftsmanship. Carved from a hickory tree that was struck multiple times by lightning, the table preserves the tree’s history in its very form: C-shaped bark inclusions mark where the tree regrew after previous strikes, while a smooth, barkless section traces the path of the final strike that felled it on September 2, 2019, in Madison County, NC.
The original trunk section weighed 650 pounds before sculpting and was carefully cured over four years to ensure dimensional stability. McDow finished the table with CrystaLac Brite Tone water-based polyurethane, a finish designed for musical instruments that enhances the wood’s natural beauty while preserving its rich character. This table is both a functional piece of furniture and a celebration of the tree’s life story, lightning-scarred history, and enduring strength.
