Gold Rush
Description
Pam Kirby creates ethereal cold wax paintings from her home studio in Asheville, where memory, emotion, and observation intertwine in layers of color and texture. A descendant of artists – including her great-grandmother, who first sparked her love for art – Pam draws from a rich family tradition of creativity.
Originally from Virginia, she moved to Asheville in 1983 and began exploring a variety of mediums. Under the guidance of acclaimed basketmaker Billie Ruth Sudduth, Pam shifted between pottery and reed basketry before turning her attention to paper. She began painting large sheets of watercolor paper, slicing them into strips with a pasta cutter and weaving them into intricate baskets – transforming a two-dimensional surface into a sculptural form.
Her discovery of oil paint and cold wax brought new depth and resonance to her work. Through a process of layering and scraping, Pam reveals what lies beneath the surface – evoking impressions shaped by memory, place, and the quiet rhythms of the natural world. Each piece is a meditation, intuitively guided by the landscapes and emotions that continue to inspire her.
