Description
This hand-carved porcelain mug by Asheville-based artist Anja Bartels brings a touch of oceanic wonder to your daily ritual. Featuring her signature narwhal design, the piece is created using the intricate sgraffito technique—a process in which dark underglaze is painted on and then carefully carved away to reveal luminous white porcelain beneath. The interior is glazed in a rich ocean blue, evoking the depth and calm of the sea and beautifully complementing the crisp marine imagery.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Bartels draws inspiration from her lifelong love of the ocean and her upbringing in a North Sea port city. Now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville, she continues to explore themes of nature, mythology, and maritime lore through her finely crafted functional art.
