Fine Furniture & Sculptural Wood Art
Inspired by Shaker and Windsor chairs and particularly drawn to bench forms, Eric Cannizzaro began a series he calls Conversation Chairs. With an interest in balance and asymmetry, this series examines the contrast between the fluid sculptural seat and the traditional contours of Windsor chair spindles and legs.
About Eric CannizzaroEric grew up in Vermont where he developed a life-long interest in natural history. After high school, he spent several years working odd-jobs and traveling through Central and South America. In 2010, he enrolled at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA to study natural history and ornithology. At Evergreen he found his way to the woodshop, where he explored arched instrument making and furniture making.
After years of going back and forth between field biology and woodwork, Eric accepted a residency at the Arbutus Folk School. There he studied the techniques employed in Windsor chairmaking and adapted them to the tools and materials available to him. In 2019, he apprenticed with Curtis Buchanan, a Windsor chairmaker in Jonesborough, TN, and accepted a residency at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. He currently lives in Jonesborough, where he makes chairs and tools.
