Folk Bird Tray

Description

Vicki Gill, a potter with a painter’s background, says she “fell in love with clay at first touch.” For her, the tactile impression is as important as the visual one, so carving and texturing methods form a common thread throughout her work. The birds on this tray are made with a wooden stamp (handmade by the artist) that is pressed into the clay when wet. The branches are drawn on. Then the designs are handpainted with vibrant underglazes and finished with a tinted transparent glaze that Vicki formulated.
