Antler With Maple Branch
Description
Joel Rakower is a wood artist whose work celebrates the harmony of form, nature, and meticulous craftsmanship. From a young age, he was drawn to making things by hand, but it wasn’t until his sophomore year of college that he realized not everyone shared his natural affinity for creating.
While moving into his first apartment, he decided to build a dining table—right in his dorm room, with no plans or power tools, simply following an idea as it took shape. As the table came together, students from across the dorm stopped by to watch, captivated by the process. When it was finished, everyone on his floor signed the underside of the table, turning it into a shared memory and a tangible reminder of the joy of creating something from nothing. That table still serves as a touchstone for Rakower’s lifelong love of handcraft.
In 1994, while raising a family and running a CPA firm, Rakower took his first woodturning class, discovering a passion that would shape his future. After retiring, he pursued power carving, using turned vessels as a canvas for intricate leaf carvings—particularly maple leaves, whose familiar forms are endlessly expressive. Negative space plays a central role in his work, adding fragility, balance, and visual depth. The meditative process of carving, which requires patience and precision, has earned him admiration from fellow woodcarvers and collectors alike.
Rakower is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, as well as local woodturning clubs and the American Association of Woodturners. His work reflects a dedication to skill, focus, and the quiet, enduring beauty of nature.
