Add an artful glow to any space with these sea urchin-inspired porcelain votives by Asheville-based artist Anja Bartels. Anja’s nautical surface designs are inspired by her love of the ocean and her childhood memories of growing up in a port city on the North Sea.
Each of these votive candle holders is hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel. Anja then uses a technique called slip trailing to apply tiny decorative spikes to the surface, which requires a steady hand and lots of patience. The interior of the votive is painted with a gorgeous aqua blue celadon glaze and the exterior has a matte finish.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Anja discovered pottery making while living in an intentional community in Virginia. Passion ignited, she returned home to study in the German Ceramics Guild. After completing a three-year apprenticeship with a master potter, she received her journeyman ceramics degree from the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. She is now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville.
Please Note: Since each votive is individually hand-thrown, expect slight variations in size.
