Sparrow Sculpture

Description

Local metal sculptor Mel Bennett creates one-of-a-kind art inspired by her love of animals. This sparrow sculpture is made out of 100% recycled and salvaged materials.

Mel starts a project by researching a creature’s anatomy. Then she sketches her subject before hunting for scrap, often scooping up metal from the side of the road. Once it’s in the studio, the metal is cut with a plasma cutter, welded, and sanded to smoothness. All sculptures are made on Mel’s small farm in Canton, NC, where she has a tiny-home studio space next to her house.

Mel is a native of Asheville. After high school, she attended Savannah College of Art and Design. She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication with a focus in illustration and a minor in sculpture.
