About the Artist
Lee Area has always found himself captivated by the majestic beauty of trees. Before discovering his passion for woodworking, he was an avid photographer who enjoyed capturing the magnificence of trees using a large-format camera.
Around a decade ago, he ventured into the craft of woodturning. His skills are self-acquired, honed through countless hours spent watching YouTube tutorials and learning from his own blunders. While he takes great pleasure in creating large pieces, he finds a unique satisfaction in crafting intricate, smaller objects.
When initiating a project, Lee invests significant time meticulously planning the final look of the piece. This detailed process involves more than just determining the shape – it also includes selecting contrasting types of wood to add visual interest. Each wood type is chosen for its unique characteristics and how it complements other woods. He also frequently uses a method known as ebonizing. This involves applying a chemical treatment to the wood that deepens its color, transforming it into a rich, dark hue.
