This crafty crow sculpture is the work of North Carolina artist Josh Coté. “Crows to me are not just birds, but are spiritual guides, shamans, or shapeshifters,” Josh explains. “I love the rich folklore surrounding corvids. Some cultures believed we become crows or ravens in the afterlife.”
Josh creates his wire sculptures using only needle-nosed pliers and some innovative techniques that he has developed throughout the years. The wire is painstakingly manipulated, wrapped, and woven to create his desired structure.
About Josh Coté
Since childhood, Josh has always been surrounded by art and artists. His grandparents were both oil painters, and his father was a watercolorist. He grew up ‘on the road’ in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, going to art festivals along the East Coast with his family. Josh found inspiration in authors like Lewis Carroll, H.G. Wells, and Dr. Seuss, which drew him into what he calls “a magical dream world.”
After studying painting and drawing at the University of Michigan’s School of Art & Design, Josh became a self-taught sculptor. He’s known for his unique and fanciful wire sculptures of creatures both wild and mythical. Some of Josh’s sculptures take months and miles of wire to complete!
