Flame Box Elder Hollow Form

This unique, one-of-a-kind hollow form was handcrafted from box elder wood by Bill and Tina Collison in their Tennessee studio. The red streaks or “flames” are the aftereffects of wounds or injuries to the tree. The streaking doesn’t damage the structure of the wood, but it does provide striking visual interest.

Native trees downed by storms, age, and disease provide the Collisons with an ample supply of raw materials. Bill uses a wood lathe to make the forms, and Tina embellishes his finished product – utilizing various processes to carve, pierce, burn and color the pieces.

“Wood has a mysterious quality as a medium that fuels our curiosity as artists. Each piece is like opening a thriller novel where the plot is only revealed in the final pages. Solving these mysteries provides us pleasure and inspiration and is the driving force in our work.” ~ Bill and Tina Collison
