Fantasize about adventures on the high seas while sipping from this “Sailing Ship Mug” by Asheville-based artist Anja Bartels. Anja’s nautical surface designs are inspired by her love of the ocean and her childhood memories of growing up in a port city on the North Sea. Each mug is hand-painted with a black underglaze which is scraped away (using a technique called sgraffito) to reveal the white color of the porcelain underneath. The ship decal is made from platinum, so these plates shouldn’t go in the microwave.
Originally from Hamburg, Germany, Anja discovered pottery making while living in an intentional community in Virginia. Passion ignited, she returned home to study in the German Ceramics Guild. After completing a three-year apprenticeship with a master potter, she received her journeyman ceramics degree from the German Chamber of Crafts and Trades. She is now an artist-in-residence at Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville.
Please Note: Each mug is individually hand-thrown and carved. Expect slight variations from image shown.
