Kim Dryden

Ceramic Art & Fine Furniture

Kim Dryden has been a working artist in Western North Carolina for two decades and a resident artist here at Grovewood Village since 2019. Kim attended Haywood Community College where she completed two programs of study (clay and wood) in their highly-regarded Professional Crafts Program. Over the years, she has continued to hone her skills at the Penland School of Crafts and at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, where she expanded her knowledge of welding procedures and techniques.

Recently, Kim has been focusing her creative energy on lighting. She uses a combination of wood and steel to handcraft one-of-a-kind table lamps, pendant lighting, and floor lamps. Kim says she’s drawn to the patina of rusted steel and the way it contrasts with the beautiful grains of mahogany, walnut, and cherry – woods she uses in her lamp designs. Her metal drum shades are welded together from perforated steel, and she uses vintage machine parts and a variety of hollow tubing as accent pieces.

Kim also produces a line of stoneware beer growlers. Her idea for Beer City Growlers came at a time when a vast amount of craft breweries started popping up in Asheville (Beer City USA). As with her lamps, all of Kim’s ceramic art is thoughtfully designed with an emphasis on high-quality craftsmanship.
