Grovewood Welcomes Julie McMillan

10/31/2011 -

Grovewood welcomes Asheville artist Julie McMillan to the gallery. Julie's fine art, limited edition photographic prints are produced with a heat infusion technique on aluminum sheet metal, bonding print and metal together for the ultimate in vibrancy, depth of color, luminescence and durability. The prints are scratch and moisture resistant and may be cleaned with a damp cloth or glass cleaner. Prices range from $170 - $480. Julie's Fall Series is currently on display in Grovewood's upstairs furniture gallery.

ABOUT JULIE MCMILLAN
One of Julie McMillan’s fondest memories is a visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains when she was a child. With her first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, in hand, she remembers begging to stop at every scenic overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway to take pictures.

Today, as owner of Silver Birch Studio Photography, the camera is different, but the mountains are the same, and so is the simple joy of capturing light in a magic box.

In between, life happened, with many years spent living in Africa, South and Central America, and New Zealand, before her return to the US and a variety of career paths, ranging from waiting tables to being a newspaper reporter and food critic. Now, McMillan draws on these experiences to hone her craft and shape her photography in her beloved adopted hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.

“I borrow moments in time, preserve them forever in the form of a photograph, hoping to go beyond words to a place where color and shape, light and shadow tell a story,” McMillan says.

FALL SERIES
My goal with my photographs is to tell a story. My hope is that my images will stir up something in people, trigger a childhood memory, a scent, an emotion… The story is not just what the photograph shows, but what the person viewing it feels. With my camera I aim to reveal what the human heart sees, rather than the eyes.

I try to achieve what I call a “state of grace” with each image, an ideal moment when the shape, form, color and light all work together. My photography is a work in progress, like everything in life.

My subject matter is most often nature, and with this series of autumn images, I hope people can feel the crisp air, smell the mulled cider and recall a perfect fall day from their past.
