Artists New to Asheville
10/07/2010 -
November 6 – December 31, 2010 | Artists’ Reception November 13 (2 – 5pm)
Ashevillians certainly understand why people are always moving to our area; but, we sometimes take for granted this part of the country that we have come to love. The natural beauty, history, outdoor activities and art and culture surround us. In many ways it is the artisans in our communities who have done so much to enrich our lifestyle.
Grovewood General Manager, Sherry Masters recalls, “Close to 20 years ago I was amazed when I attended my first national wholesale craft show. When meeting new artists at this show they would ask where our gallery was located. My answer was ‘Asheville, NC, in the western mountains’…I soon learned I just had to say ‘Asheville’, no other description was necessary!”
Artists have known about Asheville’s vibrant arts community for a long time. The schools, the galleries, the artists who have been here, and often family or friends in the area are all part of the reason they come. And they feel welcomed!
Here at Grovewood Gallery, while talking with artists, we often hear “I’m thinking of moving to this area” or they have just arrived! This is part of the background on why we are featuring an exhibition of eight artists who have recently settled in the greater Asheville area: Hayley Davison, John Davison, Marissa Domanski, Dustin Farnsworth, Alex Irvine, Timothy Maddox, Valerie Schnaufer and Klaus Spies. Their works cover a broad range - jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, furniture and paintings - in both functional and decorative styles.
Brent Skidmore, Director of the Craft Studies Initiative at UNC Asheville, has come in contact with many of these artists moving to our area and was a valuable resource in establishing this exhibit.
Join us and bring your holiday visitors to welcome these artists new to Asheville this holiday season!
