Paul Hill
Born in Tyler, Texas. The normal grade school, high school, some college, got drafted stuff. After the army, I had a small readjustment period but college was never the same for me. I mostly had a stubborn mind of my own and an "I am going to do it my way" attitude. Well, now I look back - maybe should have listened a little closer to some people - I guess I will never know.
But, I am a metal sculptor who works in steel, stainless steel, bronze and copper. I prefer to use the direct-metal approach to sculpture. In this particular discipline of work, steel, found objects, etc., are added, piece-by-piece, taking on form as it grows. Working this way lets me and the work become spontaneous and exciting. In my mind, there is a decisive idea of what the completed piece will represent, but I am always amazed and thrilled at the final outcome. For me, there seems to be an attachment of myself to the piece, in the way of a personal and tactile engagement, as to what I use and where I place each piece of material... The summation of those choices are methodically revealed to me but only a piece at a time. The completion of the piece is not always immediately evident to me... until I can take a long and deep breath - that's when I know that the choices I have made are right!"
