Deep Roots Furniture (Joshua Janis)

In the fall of 2002, Joshua Janis started his long career of woodworking at his local high school. He instantly fell in love with every part of the medium. During his senior year, Joshua wanted to find a job to take on that had some sort of woodworking in it. Through a friend, Joshua was able to get a job for one of the biggest custom wood stair companies in the Chicagoland area. Starting at the very bottom, he worked his way up to becoming one of the most skilled shop guys within two short years. Janis liked doing stair work, but his real love was making and designing furniture. He had always dreamed of going to furniture school, and at the end of five years in the stair game he left to pursue his dream. Hating the city life, Joshua wanted a good school that was also surrounded by nature. Haywood Community College had both. In August of 2007, Janis started his pursuit of a degree in furniture. Also in 2007 Deep Roots Furniture was born.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I once lived in the city surrounded by tall buildings; living there didn't provide the inspiration I was needing for my woodworking. I knew I had to find a place that was full of nature, and I had always heard stories of the Great Smoky Mountains. A few months later, I was surrounded by all the beauty that the world could offer. Deep Roots Furniture comes from all the nature that I now find myself in. My work is inspired by the sky, clouds, rivers, streams, mountains, trees, and plants. My furniture includes many curves, soft and heavy, many color contrasts, and many striking surface textures. All work is sculptural, but finds purpose in its function.
