Anvil Works (Lee Badger)

Lee Badger is the owner, director and chief talent of Anvil Works. His life-long career as a self-employed artist-blacksmith began during the 1970's in Denver and the Colorado Rockies. In the 1980's, Lee relocated to the Mid-Atlantic region and taught and worked as an artist-in-residence at Glen Echo National Park in suburban Washington, DC from 1989 to 1993.

As the scope of his business increased, Lee began to seek a regionally central location where he could create a workshop of his own design. In 1998 he built the Anvil Works studio and metal work shop in Hedgesville, WV. The shop was expanded in 2005, and in 2008, additional specialized equipment was acquired with financial assistance from the WV Division of Culture & History and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lee is a member of The Furniture Society and the International Sculpture Center. He also belongs to national, regional and local blacksmith guilds and associations, and attends metalsmithing workshops and conferences wherever his interests may lead.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I'm inspired by the rich history of furniture design and my opportunities to interpret it as an artist-blacksmith. I have no strong attraction to making sculpture that assumes the role of furniture or furniture with primarily sculptural purposes. My furniture gives a clear sense of comfort: Comfort in its functional purpose; comfort in it’s craftsmanship; comfort in its time and space; and comfort to behold. I think a piece of furniture only becomes a work of art when the design and the craftsmanship inspire each other and meld into a single accomplishment. Hand crafted steel is a versatile and beautiful material for furniture. The hand worked element is what satisfies me in a completed piece.

QUADRAT- MOTIF TABLES
Many American and European arts & crafts designers used repetitive patterns of squares to provide decorative elements without creating an excessively ornamental effect. These tables are a thoroughly modern interpretation of these arts & crafts influences.
