Anvil Works (Lee Badger)
Lee Badger is the owner, director and chief talent of Anvil Works. His life-long career as a self-employed artist-blacksmith began during the 1970's in Denver and the Colorado Rockies. In the 1980's, Lee relocated to the Mid-Atlantic region and taught and worked as an artist-in-residence at Glen Echo National Park in suburban Washington, DC from 1989 to 1993.
As the scope of his business increased, Lee began to seek a regionally central location where he could create a workshop of his own design. In 1998 he built the Anvil Works studio and metal work shop in Hedgesville, WV. The shop was expanded in 2005, and in 2008, additional specialized equipment was acquired with financial assistance from the WV Division of Culture & History and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Lee is a member of The Furniture Society and the International Sculpture Center. He also belongs to national, regional and local blacksmith guilds and associations, and attends metalsmithing workshops and conferences wherever his interests may lead.
KNOTTED TABLE
This knotted table design by Lee Badger of Anvil Works requires expert control to intertwine four steel bars into a tight symmetrical "knot." Interior design professionals admire the knotted table becasue it expresses craftsmanship equally well in both traditional and contemporary settings. Artist-blacksmiths and furniture makers appreciate subtleties of the inset top design and the skill and detail neccessary to realize them.
QUADRAT- MOTIF TABLES
Many American and European arts & crafts designers used repetitive patterns of squares to provide decorative elements without creating an excessively ornamental effect. These tables are a thoroughly modern interpretation of these arts & crafts influences.
STONE TOP TABLE
The Stone Top Table design floats a stone top on a steel framework meant to express strength without heaviness. The table's legs are cut and crafted from structural steel stock commonly known as "angle iron." I used carefully finished welds at the exposed corners of the frame, and I used hhidden welds to join the legs to the frame. This creates a strong support with a light and uplifting apperance.
