Lyman Whitaker Sculpture
Lyman Whitaker is a native of Utah. He received his Bachelors degree in sculpture from the
University of Utah where he studied classical and contemporary sculpture. Lyman has always
kept art as a primary focus. To support the pursuit of his art in the early days, he has
been a laborer, a carpenter a mechanic, a student, a teacher, a traveler, and a designer.
His diverse style is evident in his art. He works with a multitude of materials and
processes and enjoys making connections through his art.
His current focus involves Wind Sculptures, but his larger body of work is varied and
ranges from traditional bronzes to fabricated metal sculptures to fountains. Lyman's
working knowledge of building and mechanical processes is evident in his art. "As a
child I always has an interest in art, science and engineering. My wind sculptures are a
good marriage of these entities as they merge my technical abilities with my formal
artistic training," he explains. " My wing pieces can be calming force in worked
of confusion. I enjoy the fact that they have a serene effect on people."
Over a decade ago. Lyman was asked to do a sculpture that interacted with the wind. The
idea lay dormant for years. Lyman decided to simplify his earlier design and came up with
a hanger-wire model which won immediate favor. Since the first model behaved in a
reasonable fashion, the process continues, allowing the theme to gain momentum. Soon
afterwards, the design was copyrighted.
Lyman has spent an interesting life traveling and working in contrasting environments.
Spending an extended sojourn in Antarctica was one of his more memorable experiences.
Lyman was able to conceive and erect a giant sundial at the South Pole. His diverse
background has given him a rich and wonderful base to draw from in his creative endeavors.
About a decade ago, moved from his home base of Salt Lake City and built a cultural desert
home/studio in Southwestern Utah where he currently resides with his wife, and young
daughter.
