From September 15 through October 31, Grovewood Gallery has the honor of presenting a solo exhibit by resident studio artist Dan Essig. Mr. Essig is a gifted bookbinder who combines the ancient technique of coptic bindery with the art of modern creativity. The books which he will be displaying are examples of his success with original creation. The new pieces will contain the same elements of style used in books currently on display at Grovewood, (i.e. natural relics inserted into wood covers behind a pane of mica all finely bound), but will take on more sculptural qualities. We will be seeing the form of the book used to convey themes and symbols as well as interesting images. Many of Dans ideas for creating art through bookbinding have historical influences. Wearable books were once in style and could be seen on necklaces or hanging from a belt. Due to the involvement of their creation, ancient books were often made containing a chain to be secured to library shelves. Some of Mr. Essigs books are a tribute to natural history while others address architectural themes. His sculptural "Bridge" books resemble the span of a bridge and can be as tall as 4 feet. If your interest lies in Art, books, bindery, woodwork, nature, history, Architecture or anything creative, you will thoroughly enjoy Dan Essigs Solo exhibit.
